Better than we could have hoped for!

I waited to review the vagabond rooftop tent until after an 11 day, 5000 mile trek around some of the U.S. with my wife, 90lb dog, and cat. Here’s what we thought: First of all, we did a similar 7000mile 14 day trek last summer with a ground tent. Our biggest complaint with that experience was the time and energy that it took to set up camp at the end of each day, and to neatly pack it back up each morning. Having to separately deal with sleeping pads, sleeping bags, travel pillows, and a tent was a lot. But we also own a small SUV (Subaru Crosstrek) so there aren’t many towing options. We also enjoy dispersed camping and don’t want towing to limit where we can easily travel. I started my research on rooftop tents after that trip. With a 90lb dog, there was no way we could solely rely on a rooftop tent. We needed one with an annex that had a floor that attached. And we wanted the annex to be open air attached to the main bed area so that our dog would still be close by. The Roam Vagabond Rooftop Tent with the optional Annex was the answer we were looking for! Right away it was apparent that this tent is superior to any ground tent. The setup of the tent, including the annex, took the two of us an average of 12 minutes. We stored a double sleeping bag and two travel pillows in the tent the entire time, so we didn’t have to constantly roll and unroll them. The mattress is very comfortable, and the inclusion of an anti-condensation mat is a huge benefit! With the mat and the fact that the inside metal poles are covered in fabric, we had no issues with condensation even in colder conditions (mid 40s at night). Three nights were decently windy conditions. We strategically angled the car to block wind from the annex, and tightened the fly down all the way. Only one of the nights was the wind bad enough that the fly flapped and made a lot of noise. Due to the fact that the nylon straps that hold the fly down have no stop mechanism on the ends, the wind did cause the fly to come undone in a few places on multiple occasions. The same lack of a stop mechanism on the nylon straps that clip the cover on caused us to lose half of a clip on the highway when we forgot to fasten it. But that truly is my only feedback about the design of the entire thing. The only thing I will note about the thoroughness of our testing is that we didn’t experience rain at all while using this tent. Not even a little. I have total faith in the tent itself performing well in rainy conditions. I do worry about the annex though. The floor seems very thick and waterproof. The walls are very thin though, which allows for little holes to develop really easily during setup and tear down. You notice these when inside the annex and the sun hits them from the outside. I also worry because the walls are a standard length. However, a Subaru Crosstrek is a short SUV. This means the walls kind of bunch up at the bottom instead of pull taught. I think these two factors will allow water into the annex through the walls, though like I said I haven’t experienced rain with it so I am not sure. Overall our experience with this tent has been stellar. From ordering, to delivery, to setup, to usage, the process has been extremely smooth. I have no regrets about this purchase and look forward to many years and tons of adventures in the Roam Vagabond Rooftop tent with my little family.

Roof top tent for the win!

I’ve been nothing but impressed with my Vagabond. Already taken on several camping trips in the cooler weather and it’s been great. With just the rain fly on and no insulation I’ve been sleeping in shorts and a t shirt with a lite blanket in sub 40 degrees weather Roam really has it right with the Vagabond!
